Open Critiques
East of Scotland Cocker Spaniel Club Open Show
Saturday 19th. March 2022
Critique: Becky Johnson (Downstream)

My sincere thanks to the Officers and Committee for extending me this super invitation to officiate at their open show.  Despite the restrictions of Covid and the fact that some committee members were unable to attend the show ran like clockwork and the hospitality that was extended to me was second to none.  I had a wonderful day and although a long drive it was truly worth every mile.  It is not easy running shows and I applaud every single committee that has taken up the challenge during what has been a very testing time for us all.  My thanks to everybody concerned not least all of you who entered and brought your dogs forward for my assessment - I truly appreciated it.

1st Lynwater Hamilton (Scotland).   Well balanced all through.  Head with good chiselling, square muzzle and well set ears.  Well laid shoulder with correct return of upper arm.  Big ribcage with short loin.  Well rounded hindquarters. Moved accurately fore and aft and good stride when viewed in profile.  Good tail action.

JD (3, 1)
1st Inverella Iceman (Flowers).  Good overall balance.  Head well proportioned and well chiselled beneath the eyes.  Clean neck leading through to well constructed forequarters and correct topline.  Enough spring of rib.  Could be a tad shorter in loin.  Well turned stifles.  Moved well both fore and aft and in profile.  In excellent coat and condition.
2nd Cill Uaighe (Kidd).  Size bigger than the winner.  Head of pleasing shape with parallel planes and square muzzle.  Not the forehand assembly of the winner in that he is a little upright in shoulder.  Good spring of rib with short loin.  Not as tidy in movement.

1st Summer Vibes Perfekt Partner (Blazejczak).  Good overall balanced.  I would prefer a little more refinement in head.  Well laid back shoulder.  Ribcage well sprung with short loin.  Well rounded hindquarters.  Hocks set square.  Excellent bone and feet.  Moved on a good stride.
2nd Durham Blue.  Rather on the large side for my preference and longer cast than the winner.  Pleasing head with soft expression.  Good layback of shoulder and correct topline.  Hindquarters a little long hip to hock.  Good bone and feet.  Moved accurately.

GD (1)
1st Belltrees Kandyman (Clelland).   I liked this dog very much indeed.  Excellent overall balance.  Super head - equal length from occiput to stop and stop to nose with square muzzle.  Well chiselled beneath the eyes.  Lovely soft expression.  Correct low set lobular ears.  Neck is clean flowing seamlessly into a well laid shoulder and corresponding length of upper arm.  Chest of good depth and breadth.  Well sprung ribcage.  Correct topline and tailset.  To be picky he could have a little more moderation in his ben of stifle, but his hocks are set square to the ground.  Excellent bone and feet.  In super coat and condition.  Moved strongly and accurately with good tail action.  BD & BIS.

PGD (3)
1st Wyncastles French Quarter Smash with Chamford (Clifford).  Well balanced all through.  Head of good proportions with correct amount of chiselling beneath the eyes.  Muscular next leading to well laid shoulder and return of upper arm.  I would like a little more spring of rib but loin is short.  Well rounded hindquarters.  In excellent coat.  Moved out well on a good stride.
2nd More Than Amazing Time Traveller To Kenwad (Duncan & Kennedy).  This dog presents a very good square outline when viewed in profile.  Head of a good shape with low set ears.  Well laid shoulder with corresponding length of upper arm.  Better in spring of rib than winner.  Well rounded hindquarters.  Not as tidy on the move as first.
3rd Rancecraig A Million Dreams (Davidson)

LD (3)
1st Charbonnel Time N Tide (Clelland).   Another very smart dog who was very close up in the challenge.  Loved his overall make and shape.  Scores in his head which is well chiselled beneath the eyes, soft expression and correct breadth of skull.  His neck could be a little cleaner in underline.  Excellent layback of shoulder with equal length of upper arm.  Well sprung rib with short loin and well rounded hindquarters with good width of second thigh.  Hocks set square to the ground.  Moved out well.
2nd Totenkopf Dutch Coultious (Flowers).  Little longer cast than the winner and I would prefer a fraction more refinement in head.  Clean neck leading to well laid shoulder and return of upper arm.  Not the spring of rib as the winner.  Well made hindquarters with excellent bone and feet.  Could be a little tidier on the move.

2nd Misperros Silver Lining at Carmelfair (Madigan).  Another quality bitch.  Scores in her head with good chiselling beneath the eyes.  Good layback of shoulder with corresponding length of upper arm.  Well sprung rib with short loin.  Little long hip to hock and therefore more slope to the topline than would be my preference.  Moved with enthusiasm displaying good tail action.
