Open Critiques
East of Scotland Cocker Spaniel Club Open Show
Saturday 16th March 2019
Critique: Mrs Cheryl Blackley (Wightroche)

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge at this lovely friendly and very welcoming show, I thoroughly enjoyed my judging appointment with you.    What a lovely venue for a dog show, the back drop of the hills covered in snow were stunning.  Sadly, due to the early snow some exhibits were unable to attend, but the quality of exhibits attending were excellent, with only 4 incorrect bites, presentation overall was outstanding. One observation was that some exhibitors had forgotten to trim their dogs’ nails, no matter how well a foot is trimmed and prepared, if you fail to trim your dog’s nails it spoils your presentation.  Thank you to my steward Sheila for keeping everything running smoothly and efficiently, one of the best.  But a huge thank you must go to my lovely companion for the day Susan MacFarlane, who drove through some very heavy snow to ensure I reached the venue on time and in one piece.

Veteran dog, 2 (0) 1 - Craigdean's Callimakokr At Luanshya, blue roan, 9 years young with a handsome head, melting expression with a good reach of neck into correct lay back of shoulder, good rib, bone and substance was a strength of this boy who moved very well holding his topline and correct tail carriage.  Lovely boy in immaculate coat and condition and handled to perfection.  Pleased to award him Best Veteran in Show, 2 - Kirlinjis's Dare to Stare, B/R male 8 years, unlucky to meet 1 in such super condition.  Well-presented and handled, good overall balance with nice feet and bone.  Moved well with level topline, nicely angulated rear.

Minor Puppy dog 2 (0), Both puppies in this class are at different stages in their development.  1 - Duncan's Craigdean Thisll Do For Me, 8 months old O/R, lovely head with melting expression, good bone, straight front, good feet, compact well ribbed body, nicely angulated rear with correct tail set and carriage, just lost out on movement today for best Male Puppy Dog.  2 - Davidson, Rancecraig a Million Dreams, 8-month-old B/R puppy.  Pleasing head, with straight front, good shoulders, well ribbed into a great body, just preferred front movement on puppy 1.

Puppy Dog 6 (2), Madigan's Misperros Star Quest, B/R boy 11 months old, just loved his head and expression.  Good stop with correct ear set, which flowed into a good neck and front assembly and lay of shoulder, leading to well-made body and rear angulations.  It was lovely to see such a merry boy both on the move and stacked, truly exhibited a merry cocker attitude, covering the ground well with reach and drive.  Presented in good coat and handled well, just lacked maturity in his body to finish the overall picture.  Pleased to award him Best Puppy dog.  2 Torbett's Bartonholm Kings Landing at Kirlinjis (NAF), 10-month-old B/R different type to 1, he was well made throughout with good rib and bone, moved well but just not with the reach and drive of one.

Junior Dog 3 (1), Tood and Rahman's Chataway Hijacked 15-month-old B/R boy, really excelled on the move today to win this class.  He has a well-developed head which led into good lay of shoulder and straight front.  He has good rib and depth leading into his short compact body and short loin.  He has a well-made rounded rear with good angulation and well let down hocks, which he uses to advantage. Correct tail set that never stopped wagging, he has a true bustle.   I just felt that he needs time to mature in body to complete the overall picture. 2 Craigen's Lynshow Falcon, B/R 16-month-old boy, with pleasing head, good neck and front, good topline and correct tail set, just couldn't make the overall confirmation and movement of 1.
